Relative to the Army Specialist Roger Lee Memorial Highway.

ACR 203, Stone. Army Specialist Roger Lee Memorial Highway.
This measure would designate a specified portion of State Highway Route 68 in the County of Monterey as the Army Specialist Roger Lee Memorial Highway. The measure would request that the Department of Transportation determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, erect those signs.

WHEREAS, United States Army Specialist Roger Lee of Monterey, California, was killed in action on July 6, 2010, along with two others in an attack on their vehicle by insurgents with an improvised explosive device in Qalat, Afghanistan; and
WHEREAS, Lee was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, based in Hohenfels, Germany, and deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom; and
WHEREAS, Lee was a native of Monterey, California, and graduated from Monterey High School; and
WHEREAS, Before joining the United States Army, Lee worked as an automobile mechanic and lived on the central coast with his girlfriend and infant daughter; and
WHEREAS, Lee’s older brother, Linstun, said that Lee “wanted to serve his nation. He had wanted to do it since he was 10 years old”; and
WHEREAS, Lee’s childhood friend, Joe Solis, remarked that Lee “had a passion for everything. Everything he did, he put his heart and soul into it. He would get everything done for others before he would take care of himself”; and
WHEREAS, Among family and friends, Lee is remembered as a fearless adventurer who loved hot rods, his country, and his family; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the portion of State Highway Route 68 located between Morse Drive at postmile 2.26 and Skyline Forest Drive at postmile 3.37 in the County of Monterey as the Army Specialist Roger Lee Memorial Highway; and be it further
Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
