House Resolution 53

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION HONORING AND CELEBRATING THE AMERICAN RED CROSS AND ENCOURAGING ALL MISSISSIPPI CITIZENS TO RECOGNIZE THE MONTH OF MARCH 2024 AS AMERICAN RED CROSS MONTH THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI.

WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi encourages all of its citizens to observe the month of March 2024 as American Red Cross Month and celebrate the humanitarian spirit of Mississippi and reaffirm our commitment to help ensure no one faces a crisis alone; and

WHEREAS, caring for one another is at the heart of our community and exemplified by the people of Mississippi, whose simple acts of kindness through the Red Cross provide help and hope in people's most difficult moments, continuing the life saving legacy of Clara Barton, who founded the organization more than 140 years ago to prevent and alleviate human suffering; and

WHEREAS, every day, these ordinary individuals lend a helping hand to make an extraordinary difference for neighbors in need, whether it is providing emergency shelter, food and comfort for families displaced by home fires and other disasters; donating life saving blood for hospital patients; supporting military members and veterans, along with their families and caregivers, through the unique challenges of service; using vital skills like first aid and CPR to help others survive medical emergencies; or delivering international humanitarian aid and reconnecting loved ones separated by crises around the world; and

WHEREAS, the support, volunteerism and generous donations of the Red Cross are critical to Mississippi's resilience, and during the March 2023 tornadoes that ravaged communities from Rolling Fork to Amory, the people of Mississippi and its volunteers showed such compassion during that devastating time; and

WHEREAS, we encourage everyone to recognize this month of March in honor of all those who fulfill Clara Barton's noble words, "You must never think of anything except the need and how to meet it," and ask everyone to join in this commitment; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to acknowledge and honor remarkable organizations such as the  American Red Cross in which ordinary citizens perform extraordinary acts of service to not only make this great state a better place but this world a better place:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby honor and celebrate the American Red Cross and encourage all Mississippi citizens to recognize the month of March 2024 as American Red Cross Month throughout the State of Mississippi.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross, the State Board of Health and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
