SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 171
Celebrating the life of Jasmin Sadé Thomas.

 

Agreed to by the Senate, March 8, 2024

 

WHEREAS, Jasmin Sadé Thomas was a lifelong Virginian who was born and raised in Richmond, graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, and lived for a time in Arlington; and

WHEREAS, Jasmin S. Thomas carried unselfish love for those around her in all aspects of her life, which manifested in her community service, professional life, and relationships with her family and friends; and

WHEREAS, by performing more than 700 hours of community service during her time at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), Jasmin S. Thomas had a profound impact on the Blacksburg community, and she started many community service initiatives that are still in existence today; and

WHEREAS, Jasmin S. Thomas demonstrated her passion for service by organizing a group of other Virginia Tech students to travel to New Jersey to provide relief to those impacted by Hurricane Sandy; and

WHEREAS, through her work after college as a banker and assistant branch manager in both Blacksburg and Roanoke, Jasmin S. Thomas provided trusted guidance and education to her many clients, helping them to make sound financial decisions; and

WHEREAS, in her work as the vice-president of operations and editor for the Capitol News at Capitol Services Management, Inc., in Washington, D.C., Jasmin S. Thomas was known for her passionate advocacy on behalf of workers' rights; the president of the company often referred to her as a "one-woman union," due to her constant insistence that all workers be paid fairly and given access to a safe and positive work environment; and

WHEREAS, one of Jasmin S. Thomas's greatest ambitions was to find an innovative way to invest in her community by founding a nonprofit or small business with community impact; and

WHEREAS, Jasmin S. Thomas's friends and family remember her as someone who never wanted to miss a moment of the joy of life and inspired them to connect to the present and cherish every experience with the people they love; and

WHEREAS, in 2020, Jasmin S. Thomas moved back to Richmond and became a primary caretaker for her aging grandmother; her love for the woman who helped raise her was evident from the sacrifice of her own time to make sure her grandmother was safe, healthy, and comfortable; and

WHEREAS, Jasmin S. Thomas's legacy will continue to echo in the lives of all those she loved, encouraging them to live lives centered around finding joy by serving others; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Jasmin Sadé Thomas; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jasmin Sadé Thomas as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for her memory.
