AN ACT
amending Title 15, chapter 1, article 8, Arizona Revised Statutes, by adding section 15-186.02; relating to charter schools.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:
Section 1. Title 15, chapter 1, article 8, Arizona Revised Statutes, is amended by adding section 15-186.02, to read:
15-186.02. Parent councils; membership; election; duties
A. Each charter school shall establish a parent council that is composed of:
1. At least one parent of a pupil who is enrolled in the charter school's kindergarten program, if applicable.
2. At least one parent of a pupil from each grade that the charter school offers.
B. During the first month of each school year, the parents of pupils who are enrolled in the charter school's kindergarten program and in each grade that the charter school offers shall elect their respective representative or representatives to the parent council.
C. The parent council shall:
1. Meet with school leadership at least quarterly.
2. Review quarterly financial information, including budgets to actuals.
3. Review annual financial submissions.
4. Review other key metrics of the charter school, including:
(a) The rate of pupil suspensions and expulsions by rate and ethnicity.
(b) Faculty and administration terminations.
5. Provide input regarding the selection of a new school principal, if applicable.
