A RESOLUTION
on the death of dorwan stoddard.
(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)
Dorwan Stoddard was killed on January 8, 2011 at the age of seventy-six during a horrendous assassination attempt on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' life.
Mr. Stoddard, who grew up in Tucson, had moved back to the area after the death of his first wife. He became reacquainted with his grade school sweetheart, Mavy, and the couple married. Together, they enjoyed traveling and helping people in need. A retired construction worker, Mr. Stoddard was involved with numerous construction projects at Mountain Avenue Church of Christ.
Six innocent people, including Dorwan Stoddard, were tragically killed on the morning of January 8, 2011, when a lone gunman began shooting those who had gathered at Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' Congress on Your Corner event in Tucson. Mr. Stoddard heroically dove to the ground and shielded his wife from the gunfire, sacrificing his life for hers.
This senseless attack has shocked and saddened all Americans and the citizens of Arizona are in mourning. Yet for many, their grief goes deeper than can be imagined as they face the terrible reality of the loss of innocent loved ones. A loving and dedicated husband and father, Dorwan Stoddard will be greatly missed by his wife, Mavy, his two sons, his three stepdaughters and his many friends in the Tucson community.
Therefore
Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona:
That the Members of the Senate sincerely regret the passing of Dorwan Stoddard and extend their deepest sympathies to his family and many friends.
