   Relative to American Heart Month and Wear Red Day.


	LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST


   SCR 64, Romero. American Heart Month and Wear Red Day.
   This measure would recognize the month of February 2010 as
American Heart Month in California, would recognize February 4, 2010,
as Wear Red Day in California, and would urge public support for Go
Red for Women events.



   WHEREAS, Diseases of the heart are the leading cause of death and
stroke and is the third leading cause of death in California and the
United States; and
   WHEREAS, In 2009, the direct and indirect costs of cardiovascular
disease and stroke in the United States is estimated to be $503.2
billion; and
   WHEREAS, Cardiovascular diseases claim the lives of over 460,000
American women each year, approximately one death per minute; and
   WHEREAS, Each year, 53 percent of all cardiovascular disease and
61 percent of stroke deaths occur in women; and
   WHEREAS, More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next
five leading causes of death combined, including all cancers; and
   WHEREAS, Only 21 percent of women perceive heart disease as their
greatest risk; and
   WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is committed to conducting
and supporting medical research that advances knowledge in the areas
of prevention and treatment of heart disease and stroke; and
   WHEREAS, The American Heart Association strives to inform all
citizens about the critical importance of tools and skills that will
increase the survival rate of men and women from heart disease and
stroke; and
   WHEREAS, February is designated as American Heart Month and the
American Heart Association will encourage citizens to learn the
warning signs and risk factors of heart disease and stroke; and
   WHEREAS, Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association's
national call to increase awareness of heart disease, the leading
cause of death for women, and to inspire women to take charge of
their heart health; and
   WHEREAS, All women should learn their own personal risk for heart
disease, using tools like the American Heart Association's Go Red for
Women Heart Checkup, and by talking to their health care provider;
and
   WHEREAS, By choosing to Speak Up about heart disease we can save
lives using the power of our own voices; and
   WHEREAS, Making the right choices relating to proper nutrition,
physical activity, doctor visits, and other lifestyle methods is
essential to living a heart healthy life; and
   WHEREAS, Wear Red Day is recognized nationwide each year to
highlight the Go Red for Women campaign; now, therefore, be it
   Resolved, by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
thereof concurring, That the Legislature recognizes the month of
February 2010 as American Heart Month in California in order to raise
awareness of the importance of the ongoing fight against heart
disease and stroke; and be it further
   Resolved, That the Legislature recognizes February 4, 2010, as
Wear Red Day in California, and urges all citizens to show their
support for women and the fight against heart disease by
commemorating this day by wearing the color red; and be it further
   Resolved, That the Legislature urges public support for Go Red for
Women events planned in California during American Heart Month; and
be it further
   Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this
resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
