WHEREAS, The United Mexican States was officially established as an independent nation on September 16, 1821, after securing its independence from Spain; and
WHEREAS, The United Mexican States is the 10th most populated country in the world, with a population surpassing 130,000,000 million people; and
WHEREAS, The United Mexican States ranks among the top 15 global economies by gross domestic product (GDP), is the second largest export partner of the United States of America, and the largest source of imports for the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, The United Mexican States maintains strong cultural, historical, social, and economic ties with California through its history, border, and people; and
WHEREAS, The United Mexican States have elected its first female president in its 203-year history; and
WHEREAS, Through a democratic process, the citizens of the United Mexican States exercised their rights and made their voices heard, electing Dr.Claudia Sheinbaum as the first female President, in the 2024 Mexican presidential election; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum is a woman of firsts as the first female President to be elected among the three largest North American countries, which includes Canada and the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum will be the inaugural president from a predominantly Jewish background in the United Mexican States; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum earned her Ph.D. in energy engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1994. She conducted her doctoral research at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. Her dissertation analyzed and compared trends in energy usage between the United Mexican States and other various countries; and
WHEREAS, From 2000 to 2006, inclusive, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum served as the Secretary of the Environment while the current president of the United Mexican States, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, was the Mayor of Mexico City. Her work focused on energy utilization and its use in the United Mexican States transportation sectors. In particular, Claudia Sheinbaum oversaw the introduction of Mexico City’s bus system, Metrobus; and
WHEREAS, In 2007, Dr.Claudia Sheinbaum was a contributor to the United Nations Mitigation report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). As a scientist, Dr.Sheinbaum was part of the United Nations panel of climate scientists that received the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for the report; and
WHEREAS, Claudia Sheinbaum served as the Mayor of the Tlalpan district of Mexico City from 2015 to 2017, inclusive, and subsequently as the Mayor of Mexico City from 2018 to 2023, inclusive, before stepping down to run for the 2024 Mexican presidential election; and
WHEREAS, Ascending to the Presidency will undoubtedly inspire many young girls and women, particularly Latinas, throughout California to become interested and involved in politics. Dr.Sheinbaum’s contributions in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and political science will encourage Mexicans worldwide to feel pride and will encourage a commitment to learning and competency in all endeavors; and
WHEREAS, This achievement represents a significant milestone in advancing gender equity and reflects an important change in the global political landscape, especially as it relates to the opportunity to create a more productive, proactive, positive relationship between the United Mexican States and the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, The State of California looks forward to collaborating with President-Elect Sheinbaum and her administration to enhance and broaden the enduring partnership between the two regions; and
WHEREAS, The presidential inauguration will take place on October 1, 2024; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate celebrates the election of the United Mexican States’ first female president Dr.Claudia Sheinbaum and the inspiration it will bring to women across California and the world; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
