Florida Senate - 2015 (NP) SR 1068 By Senator Bean 4-01688-15 20151068__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing March 2015 as “Brain Injury 3 Awareness Month” in Florida. 4 5 WHEREAS, each year, about 136,000 Floridians suffer 6 traumatic brain injuries, and 7 WHEREAS, more than 9,800 Floridians sustain permanent, 8 lifelong disabilities from traumatic brain injury, resulting in 9 a life-altering experience that may include serious physical, 10 cognitive, and emotional impairments, and 11 WHEREAS, more than 214,000 Floridians currently live with 12 permanent disabilities resulting from a traumatic brain injury, 13 but the lack of public awareness is so pervasive that traumatic 14 brain injury is known in the disability community as the “silent 15 epidemic,” and 16 WHEREAS, traumatic brain injury attributable to roadside 17 bombs and blasts is one of the signature wounds of the global 18 War on Terror, and military personnel who return to this state 19 with traumatic brain injuries require additional state and local 20 resources, and 21 WHEREAS, most cases of traumatic brain injury are 22 preventable, and enhanced public awareness of traumatic brain 23 injury is essential in injury prevention, the development of 24 effective treatment, and securing necessary resources, and 25 WHEREAS, founded in 1985, the Brain Injury Association of 26 Florida, Inc., is the only statewide nonprofit corporation whose 27 mission is to improve the quality of life for all persons with 28 brain injury and their families by creating a better future 29 through brain injury awareness, research, prevention, education, 30 support services, and advocacy, NOW, THEREFORE, 31 32 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 33 34 That March 2015 is recognized as “Brain Injury Awareness 35 Month” in Florida. 36 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with 37 the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to the Brain Injury 38 Association of Florida, Inc., as a tangible token of the 39 sentiments of the Florida Senate.
