Florida Senate - 2018 (NP) SR 1826 By Senator Campbell 38-01389A-18 20181826__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing the City of North Bay Village 3 on the occasion of the 73rd anniversary of its 4 founding. 5 6 WHEREAS, before 1940, most of what is now North Bay Village 7 lay beneath the waters of Biscayne Bay, the only dry land being 8 Broadcast Key, a 5-acre island from which pioneering Miami radio 9 station WIOD-AM began broadcasting in 1926, and 10 WHEREAS, North Bay Island was actually created from the 11 dredging that took place in Biscayne Bay, and, by 1941, 12 homes 12 occupied the residential lots that had been laid out along the 13 island’s palm-lined streets, and 14 WHEREAS, in similar fashion, Harbor Island and Treasure 15 Island both took shape from dredge and fill activities, with 16 multifamily developments and single-family homes shaping those 17 communities’ residential growth, and 18 WHEREAS, North Bay Village was incorporated in 1945, and 19 the city annexed Harbor Island and Treasure Island several years 20 later, while Broadcast Key, also known as Cameo Island, was 21 annexed in 1963, and 22 WHEREAS, during its early years, North Bay Village was 23 primarily a haven for winter residents, and the city became 24 widely known for its popular restaurants and nightclubs, which 25 attracted such celebrities as Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland, 26 and 27 WHEREAS, today North Bay Village, the “Three Island 28 Paradise,” has a population of more than 8,200 people, most of 29 whom live in the community year-round, and it remains home to 30 several of South Florida’s most popular restaurants, the 31 broadcast studios of WSVN-TV, as well as a variety of apartment 32 buildings, condominiums, and 376 single-family homes, and 33 WHEREAS, North Bay Village is led by Mayor Connie Leon 34 Kreps, Vice Mayor Eddie Lim; Commissioners Jose Alvarez, Douglas 35 N. Hornsby, M.D., and Andreana Jackson; and Village Manager 36 Frank Rollason, NOW, THEREFORE, 37 38 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 39 40 That the City of North Bay Village is recognized on the 41 occasion of the 73rd anniversary of its founding.
