A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Congressman Edgar Lanier Jenkins; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Congressman Edgar Lanier Jenkins; and

WHEREAS, Congressmen Jenkins was born in 1933, in Towns County, a beloved son of Charlie and Evia Jenkins; and

WHEREAS, he protected this nation's freedom and liberty by serving with the United States Coast Guard; and

WHEREAS, Congressman Edgar Lanier Jenkins was united in love and marriage to Jo Jenkins and was blessed with two remarkable daughters, Janice Jenkins Anderson and Amy Jenkins Dotson, and two remarkable grandsons, Sam and Drew Dotson; and

WHEREAS, he attended Young Harris College and graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law; and

WHEREAS, he became an assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia and entered the private practice of law in Jasper; and

WHEREAS, he was elected to the United States House of Representative in 1976 and served with distinction and honor for 16 years; and

WHEREAS, Congressman Jenkins served as a founding board member of Pickens Technical Institute, a member and chair of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, and a trustee emeritus of Young Harris College; and

WHEREAS, he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern for his fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he demonstrated to his family and friends were admired by others; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Congressman Jenkins will long be remembered for his love of family and friendship, and this loyal son, husband, father, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Congressman Edgar Lanier Jenkins and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Congressman Edgar Lanier Jenkins.
