RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the 14th annual Collard Green Festival in Port Wentworth,
Georgia; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the annual Collard Green Festival is held at The Promised Land Farm in the
Monteith community of Port Wentworth, Georgia, to celebrate the delicious and
truly southern crop, the collard green; and
WHEREAS,
held annually on the first Saturday in March, the Collard Green Festival is in
its 14th year and will be celebrated this year with a collard green giveaway,
with free collards given away to senior citizens and military families;
and
WHEREAS,
more than 1,200 people attended the 2010 Collard Green Festival and this year's
gathering is slated to be an even bigger success; and
WHEREAS,
The Promised Land Farm is owned by Willie and Robert Johnson and was purchased
from the descendants of Roderick Steele, a Civil War slave credited as a hero in
the battles that took place around Monteith; and
WHEREAS,
the farm is over 30 acres and grows regional fruits and vegetables year round;
and
WHEREAS,
on September 11, 2010, the farm conducted a blessing of the greens to
acknowledge God's role in all things and to seek a special blessing on the
year's crops, the farming families, and all who benefit from the crops;
and
WHEREAS,
the annual Collard Green Festival provides wholesome family entertainment while
also giving back to local citizens and it is only fitting and proper that this
event be recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize the 14th annual Collard Green Festival as an amazing
community event and extend best wishes for a successful day to its organizers
and attendees.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Willie Johnson
and Robert Johnson.
