A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the German Consulate; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, there is a bond of friendship between the citizens of Georgia and Germany, and the people of Georgia welcome opportunities to grow our already deep relationship at all levels, including cultural, academic, and business; and

WHEREAS, German Consul General Dr. Lutz Hermann Görgens has long been recognized for his role in leadership and his deep personal commitment to fostering diplomatic relationships with countries around the world; and

WHEREAS, Atlanta and all of Georgia are honored to have served as the home of the consulate of Germany since September 10, 1904; and

WHEREAS, the German government's Transatlantic Climate Bridge initiative was launched in 2008 to foster transatlantic cooperation in the climate and energy arena, with a focus on renewable energy development and energy efficiency measures; and

WHEREAS, in the past two years, Georgia and Germany have engaged in numerous joint projects, including the German-American Panel Discussion on Energy Efficient Buildings, the 19th Georgia Recycling Coalition Conference on St. Simons Island, the 5th Annual Georgia Environmental Conference, the Green Business Works Expo, and an environmental trade mission; and

WHEREAS, German companies in the renewable energy sector have opened plants in Georgia, creating hundreds of new local jobs with companies such as MAGE Solar in Dublin, RWE in Waycross, and ZF Industries in Gwinnett County; and

WHEREAS, the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Southern US, Inc., (GACC South) is one of the largest bilateral chambers of commerce in the Southeast, with a focus on growing German business and investment in the region; and

WHEREAS, hundreds of German companies have entered the United States with the assistance of GACC South and its president and CEO, Mr. Kristian Wolf; and

WHEREAS, Germany has proven that economic growth is possible while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and developing a renewable energy industry; and

WHEREAS, by working together, Georgia and Germany have the opportunity to encourage the development of sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy, to create new green jobs, and to enhance energy security.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize the special friendship between Georgia and Germany and express appreciation to German Consul General Dr. Lutz Hermann Görgens and Mr. Kristian Wolf for their efforts to promote and grow commercial and cultural ties between our two nations.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to German Consul General Dr. Lutz Hermann Görgens and Mr. Kristian Wolf.
