A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Mrs. Helen Odessa Dixon Davenport on the occasion of her 85th birthday; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Helen Odessa Dixon Davenport was born on May 16, 1926, in Jonesboro, Georgia, the beloved daughter of Henry and Clara Dixon, and this year she enjoys the rare distinction of celebrating her 85th birthday; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Davenport earned a bachelor's degree in home economics from Clark College and a master's degree in education from Atlanta University; and

WHEREAS, she dedicated 38 years to uplifting the lives of young people through her work as an educator at W.A. Fountain High School in Forest Park and Lillie E. Suder Elementary School in Jonesboro; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Davenport's leadership and service have been invaluable to numerous organizations, including the Arnold-Fountain Professional Club, American Business Women's Association, National Education Association, Georgia Association of Educators, Clayton County Education Association, Concerned Black Citizens Coalition of Clayton County, Rainbow PUSH Coalition, NAACP Clayton County Branch, International Reading Association, Clayton County Reading Association, Clayton County Retired Teachers Association, and Georgia State Consumer Advisory Board; and

WHEREAS, a woman of deep and abiding faith, Mrs. Davenport has been an active member of Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church for over 70 years; and

WHEREAS, she is the proud mother of two remarkable daughters, retired Clayton County school teacher Carolyn Davenport and Georgia State Senator Gail Davenport; and

WHEREAS, the devotion, patience, and understanding she has demonstrated have provided the foundation and framework of success in which her family members have developed and flourished; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Davenport possesses the vast wisdom which only comes through experience and the strength of character which is achieved through overcoming the many challenges of life; and

WHEREAS, she is a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness; and

WHEREAS, a kind and generous woman, Mrs. Davenport brings joy and happiness to her many friends, neighbors, and family members who have the great pleasure of knowing her; and

WHEREAS, by the example Mrs. Davenport has made of her life, she makes this world a better place in which to live, and it is only fitting and proper that she be appropriately recognized during this very special and memorable time of her life.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Mrs. Helen Odessa Dixon Davenport for her loving and dedicated service to the members of her family and the citizens of her community, congratulate her upon the grand occasion of her 85th birthday, and extend to her best wishes for continued health and happiness.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Helen Odessa Dixon Davenport.
