HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.B. NO.

1407

TWENTY-FIFTH LEGISLATURE, 2009

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to preservation.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that the Ewa Marine Corps Air Station was one of the first airfields in Hawaii, and was the first American facility attacked on December 7th, 1941.  The legislature also finds that the air field continued to play an important role during World War II, serving as the birth place of Marine Fighter Squadron Two One Four, the famous "Black Sheep" squadron, and was originally intended to be the main Marine Corps base for Oahu.  Closed in 1952, the air field was eventually made a part of the Barbers Point Airfield in 1997.  The legislature further finds that in 2008, the U.S. Navy announced the leasing of property at Kalaeloa, including the old Ewa Marine Corps Air Station land, to Ford Island Properties, and that the property will end up in the hands of private developers who will be under no obligation to protect the historic nature of this property.

The purpose of this Act is to preserve the Ewa Marine Corps Air Station as a historic site.

SECTION 2.  Notwithstanding any law to the contrary, the property known as the Ewa Marine Corps Air Station, including runways three and eight, and all existing aircraft revetments and bunkers, shall be places on the Hawaii Register of Historic Places.  The state historic preservation office shall also begin the process of placing the Ewa Marine Corps Air Station on the National Register of Historic Places.

SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
