HOUSE RESOLUTION
urging the International Olympic Committee, International Paralympic Committee, united states olympic committee, and THE Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to encourage olympic and paralympic athletes to train in hawaii FOR THE 2020 SUMMER OLYMPICS AND THE 2020 SUMMER PARALYMPICs.
WHEREAS, Hawaii has a rich cultural, historical, and spiritual heritage in sports and athletics; and
WHEREAS, sports were a significant part of Native Hawaiian culture and life, with athletics being an important way of showcasing the physical abilities of Hawaiian warriors; and
WHEREAS, competitive sports were an important element in the ceremonies associated with the Makahiki season, with ali'i and commoners alike training to compete; and
WHEREAS, athletics remains an important part of Hawaii's culture, with the State holding a large number of major international and national sports events each year, including the Honolulu Marathon; Moloka'i Hoe Canoe Race; IRONMAN World Championship; XTERRA World Championship; Maui Jim Maui Invitational; major golf tournaments including the Sony Open and Mitsubishi Electric Championship; and numerous surfing events including The Quicksilver in memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational and the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing; and
WHEREAS, sports tourism has also been a major driver of Hawaii's economy, producing $144,000,000 in economic impacts in 2016; and
WHEREAS, the International Olympic Committee approved the addition of baseball, softball, karate, sport climbing, surfing, and skateboarding to the 2020 Summer Olympics, and the International Paralympic Committee approved the addition of badminton and taekwondo to the 2020 Summer Paralympics; and
WHEREAS, many of these new sport additions have long, rich traditions in the State, most notably the sport of surfing, the heritage of which can be directly traced to the Native Hawaiians; and
WHEREAS, in addition to the State's rich sports legacy, Hawaii is blessed with the spirit of aloha and is welcoming to all visiting athletes, including all potential Olympic or Paralympic athletes; and
WHEREAS, the State of Hawaii is eager and prepared to work together with the International Olympic Committee, International Paralympic Committee, United States Olympic Committee, and the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to welcome all athletes who wish to train for the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics in Hawaii; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2018, that the International Olympic Committee, International Paralympic Committee, United States Olympic Committee, and the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games are urged to encourage Olympic and Paralympic Athletes training to compete in the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics to conduct their athletic training in Hawaii; and
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the United
States Secretary of State, members of Hawaii's Congressional Delegation, Governor,
Chief Executive Officer of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, Chairperson of the
Stadium Authority, Director of Athletics of the University of Hawaii at Manoa,
Chairperson of the Disability and Communication Access Board, Mayor of each county,
President of the International Olympic Committee, President of the
International Paralympic Committee, Chief Executive Officer of the United
States Olympic Committee, Director General of the Tokyo Organising Committee of
the Olympic and Paralympic Games,
Dean of the Consular Corps of Hawaii, and President of the Hawaii Lodging and
Tourism Association.
