HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

congratulating operation manong on the occasion of its 40th anniversary and commending its members for providing outreach activities which encourage underrepresented and underserved groups to pursue higher education.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the State of Hawaii is unique in its location as a melting pot of cultures, and it is the harmony of the many cultures that makes our State special; and

 

     WHEREAS, OPERATION MANONG, renamed the University of Hawaii's Office of Multicultural Student Services in 2000, is a multi-ethnic group that conducts student service programs and activities that ensure equal access to higher education for underserved communities and ethnic groups that are underrepresented in higher education; and

 

     WHEREAS, OPERATION MANONG offers university students opportunities to experience Hawaii's multicultural character, conducts activities which promote cross-cultural understanding and social justice, and provides a clearinghouse for information and resources related to Hawaii's multiethnic groups; and

 

     WHEREAS, OPERATION MANONG's goal to promote excellence and educational equity supports the missions of the University of Hawaii and the Department of Education; and

 

     WHEREAS, OPERATION MANONG has collaborated with other organizations that advance the cause of heritage rights, student development, leadership, career opportunities, and intensive programs in student teaching and youth development; and

 

     WHEREAS, for the past forty years, OPERATION MANONG has been involved in the recruitment and retention of students, conducting student conferences, exposing high school students to a wide range of experiences related to university life, and equipping students with the skills to give back to their communities; and

 

     WHEREAS, since the early 1970s, OPERATION MANONG has produced hundreds of teachers, engineers, doctors, lawyers, nurses, social workers, and business executives, as well as generations of Hawaii's leaders, most notably former Insurance Commissioner and businessman Robin Campaniano, State House of Representatives Vice Speaker Joey Manahan, Media and Television producer Emme Tomimbang, Office of Hawaiian Affairs Chairperson Collette Machado, Deputy Director of Transportation Jade Butay, and esteemed educators Johnny Verzon and Milli Asuncion; and

 

     WHEREAS, on Sunday, March 25, 2012, OPERATION MANONG will celebrate the momentous occasion of its 40th Anniversary at the FilCom Center in Waipahu, Hawaii; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2012, that this body hereby congratulates the members of OPERATION MANONG on the occasion of its 40th Anniversary, expresses to them its heartfelt gratitude for providing outreach activities to individuals from underrepresented and underserved groups which encourage the pursuit of higher education, and extends to them its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in the years to come.
