HOUSE RESOLUTION
requesting the department of education and the university of hawaii system to design programs that allow hawaii students to develop the necessary skills to facilitate hawaii's greater involvement in international peace and conflict resolutions.
WHEREAS, Hawaii is centrally located within the Pacific Ocean and is accessible from the Americas, Oceania, Eurasia, and Africa; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii has a unique and culturally rich heritage that can be found in its architecture, artifacts, history, music, dress, food, and people; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii's geographic diversity, culturally rich heritage, and historic significance attracts millions of visitors each year from around the world; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii's central location provides an attractive location for businesses, organizations, and government agencies to hold their meetings and conventions; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii is a forward-looking state with a global persona and multi-national perspective in which numerous countries have a Consulate General; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii is an ideal location for exploring peacekeeping options that are consistent with the Hawaiian values of peace which include acceptance, unconditional personal regard, harmony, balance, patience, respect, pleasantness, and humility; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii is home to the Spark M. Matsunaga Institute for Peace at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, dedicated to the promotion of cross-cultural communication and peacemaking leadership; and
WHEREAS, in 2011, Hawaii hosted the 19th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic Leaders' meeting where leaders from around the world came together to discuss international matters; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii demonstrated that it has the resources and capabilities to host significant international and intergovernmental meetings; and
WHEREAS, the Legislature recognizes the need to provide Hawaii's students with the necessary skills to facilitate Hawaii's greater involvement in international peace and conflict resolutions; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013, that the Department of Education and the University of Hawaii System is requested to design programs that allow Hawaii students to develop the necessary skills to facilitate Hawaii's greater involvement in international peace and conflict resolutions; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education, the Superintendent of Education, the Chancellor of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the President of the University of Hawaii, and the Chairperson of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii.
