HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

urging the department of education not to use any type of pesticide or herbicide on any school property.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, although pesticides and herbicides can help limit the environmental and economic damage that can be caused by insects, weeds, and plant diseases, they can also pose serious risks to human health and the environment; and

 

     WHEREAS, children are particularly susceptible to pesticide and herbicide exposure, since their bodies are undergoing rapid development; and

 

     WHEREAS, numerous scientific studies have linked both cancer and asthma to pesticide and herbicide exposure; and

 

     WHEREAS, childhood cancer is increasing at an alarming rate; and

 

     WHEREAS, the incidence of asthma is also increasing and is the nation's leading cause of absenteeism among school children with chronic illnesses; and

 

     WHEREAS, children can be exposed to pesticides and herbicides that are carried on tiny bits of airborne pollen; and

 

     WHEREAS, pesticides and herbicides can also contaminate water runoff or seep into the ground; and

 

     WHEREAS, there is a need to protect children from the potential dangers associated with pesticide and herbicide exposure; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, that the Department of Education is urged to not use any type of pesticide or herbicide on any school property; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education and the Superintendent of Education.
