HOUSE RESOLUTION
congratulating the 2015 state champion kahuku High and Intermediate School red raiders football team and acknowledging the community-based organizations Kahuku facilities advancement support team and keep laie elementary cool for their efforts to improve public schools in house of representatives district 47.
WHEREAS, the Kahuku High and Intermediate School Red Raiders have once again won the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I State Championship, completing a perfect season of thirteen wins and no losses; and
WHEREAS, the Kahuku Red Raiders have won twenty-four Oahu Interscholastic Association championships since 1943 and eight state championships since the state championship era began in 1999; and
WHEREAS, the Kahuku Red Raiders have gained a national reputation and have established a tradition of producing athletes who go on to be successful in college football programs and the National Football League; and
WHEREAS, the Kahuku Red Raiders have represented the community well and demonstrated why they are known as the Pride of the North Shore; and
WHEREAS, despite playing on a substandard football field that is flooded multiple times each year, and having to practice in a district park, the Kahuku Red Raiders continue to strive for greatness; and
WHEREAS, dedicated community-based groups have worked hard to improve educational facilities in the area; and
WHEREAS, Kahuku High and Intermediate School was established in 1914 and is the second-oldest public high school on Oahu; and
WHEREAS, Kahuku High and Intermediate School has obvious and long-standing facility improvement needs; and
WHEREAS, Kahuku Facilities Advancement Support Team, or KFAST, was established in August of 2015 to help match the school's facility needs with available community resources; and
WHEREAS, since its inception, KFAST has completed more than twenty-five service projects with volunteers ranging from private businesses to church groups and other community organizations; and
WHEREAS, Laie Elementary School was founded in 1895, is one of the oldest schools on Oahu, and has classrooms that need costly electrical upgrades; and
WHEREAS, temperatures is the classrooms often soar between eighty and one hundred degrees Fahrenheit, with humidity levels ranging from eighty to ninety per cent; and
WHEREAS, Keep Laie Elementary Cool is a grassroots initiative of parents, students, and community members who joined together to help alleviate the heat problems at Laie Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Keep Laie Elementary Cool has been educating community members, nearby business owners, and alumni through their use of social media, traditional media, and crowd-funding mechanisms; and
WHEREAS, Keep Laie Elementary Cool has raised more than $19,000 and has been working with other local groups to implement cost-effective and sustainable solutions to cool the classrooms; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2016, that this body hereby congratulates the 2015 state champion Kahuku High and Intermediate School Red Raiders football team and acknowledges the community-based organizations Kahuku Facilities Advancement Support Team and Keep Laie Elementary Cool for their efforts to improve public schools in House of Representatives District 47; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to Kahuku High and Intermediate School, Laie Elementary School, Kahuku Facilities Advancement Support Team, and Keep Laie Elementary Cool.
