HOUSE RESOLUTION
urging thAT THE CORRECT HISTORY OF THE BATTLE OF KAKANILU‘A BE INSERTED INTO ARCHEOLOGICAL REPORTS, CULTURAL IMPACT STATEMENTS, STATE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION DIVISION RECORDS, PUBLIC LIBRARIES, and OTHER PERTINENT DIGITAL COLLECTIONS, and urging maui county to ban sand mining in the waikapu sand dune area.
WHEREAS, the people of Hawaii have a kuleana to all generations of Hawaii to protect correct and accurate reporting of the history of the Hawaiian people and to recognize and preserve significant battle areas such as Nuuanu Pali, Oahu; Waimea, Hawaii; and Iao, Maui; and
WHEREAS, the Battle of Kakanilu‘a, also known as the Battle of the Feather Capes, the Battle of Sandhills, or Ahalau Ka Piipii O Kakanilu‘a was a major event in the history of Maui and Hawaii and was one of the most fiercely contested battles for dominion over the islands of Hawaii, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Oahu by Kahekiliahumanu Mo‘i of Maui and Kalaniopu‘u Mo‘i of Hawaii in the 1700s; and
WHEREAS, over 3,000 individuals died in two days of battle that took place in the sand dunes of Waikapu and Wailuku; members of every blood line of Hawaiian ali‘i and makaainana families perished in the sand, thereby staining the sand red; thus, the name Pu‘uoneoka Hulu‘u was given to this area; and
WHEREAS, the descendants of the many families who
lost ancestors during the Battle of Kakanilu‘a
desire to commemorate the sacrifices of their kupuna and keep this important
historical event memorialized for future generations; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh
Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013, that this body urges
that, upon verification, the correct history of the Battle of Kakanilu‘a be inserted into archeological
reports, cultural impact statements, State Historic Preservation Division
records, the historical collections of public libraries, and other pertinent
digital collections; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County of Maui is urged to preserve the remaining sand dunes and the resting places of Hawaiian ancestors by banning sand mining and refusing to grant grading permits that involve removing sand in the Waikapu sand dune area contained in parcel TMK (2) 3-8-007:101, as ordered by the Maui/Lanai Islands Burial Council in December 2008; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Maui County Council keep the remaining Waikapu sand dune area as a park and preservation land as specified on the Maui Island Plan Protected Areas Diagram WC-1 adopted in December 2012; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Mayor of Maui County, Chairperson of the Maui County Council, Chairperson of the Maui Planning Commission, Administrator of the State Historic Preservation Division, Chairperson of the Maui/Lanai Islands Burial Council, Chairperson of the Maui County Cultural Resources Commission, and Chairperson of the Native Hawaiian Historic Preservation Council.
