A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

Making an appropriation for emergency medical services.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 

     SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that the recent closure of the Hawaii Medical Center facilities, after eighty-five years of serving patients, has had a devastating impact on emergency medical services in west Oahu.  In addition to transferring all patients to other hospitals and long-term care facilities, Hawaii Medical Center laid off the majority of its nearly 1,000 employees.  While the Hawaii Medical Center facilities are likely to be acquired and reopened at some point by one of the State's existing operators, in the interim area residents are concerned about the shortage of emergency medical services.

     The purpose of this Act is to appropriate moneys for emergency medical services in west Oahu.

     SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $1,500,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2012-2013 for emergency medical services in the west Oahu region.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of health for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
