SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

Requesting the department of commerce and consumer affairs to convene a dental assistant working group to develop and recommend certification requirements for dental assistants.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the licensure or certification of professionals in the service industry helps to build consumer confidence and trust in the services they receive; and

 

     WHEREAS, proper certification of dental assistants is necessary to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of the State's citizens; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii is a part of a small group of states that does not require dental assistants to be certified; and

 

     WHEREAS, oral health experts should determine the criteria necessary to create a regulatory framework that allows dental assistants to grow in their profession while also ensuring patient safety; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2020, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs is requested to convene a dental assistant working group to develop and recommend certification requirements for dental assistants in the State; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the working group is requested to consist of the following members:

 

     (1)  The Director of Commerce and Consumer Affairs or the Director's designee, who shall serve as chairperson of the working group;

 

     (2)  The Director of Health or the Director's designee;

 

     (3)  A member of the Board of Dentistry;

 

     (4)  A representative from the Hawaii Dental Association;

 

     (5)  A representative from the Hawaii Dental Hygienists' Association; and

      

     (6)  A representative from the Dental Assisting Program at Kapiolani Community College; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the working group is requested to submit a report of its findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2021; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Director of Commerce and Consumer Affairs; Director of Health; Chairperson of the Board of Dentistry; President of the Hawaii Dental Association; President of the Hawaii Dental Hygienists' Association; and Dean of Health Academic Programs at Kapiolani Community College.
