SENATE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
URGING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO NAME THE MOKULELE bike PATH AFTER FORMER STATE REPRESENTATIVE JOSEPH "JOEY" W. BERTRAM III IN RECOGNITION AND CELEBRATION OF HIS LIFE AND ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MAUI VETERANS HIGHWAY BIKE ROUTE.
WHEREAS, this body is proud to honor individuals and organizations who work tirelessly to benefit their community; and
WHEREAS, one such individual is former State Representative Joseph "Joey" W. Bertram III, who was born on April 29, 1957, and who attended Kihei Elementary School before eventually graduating from Baldwin High School, and who passed away at age sixty-three on May 24, 2020; and
WHEREAS, Joseph "Joey" W. Bertram III dedicated four years of his life serving as a State Representative for District 11 in South Maui; and
WHEREAS, Joseph "Joey" W. Bertram III was a strong advocate for greenways, open space, bikeways, and improved public transportation; and
WHEREAS, Joseph "Joey" W. Bertram III was the Founder and Director of Public Access Trails Hawai‘i-Maui, Director for Greenways Maui, and participated in many community organizations, such as the Kihei Community Association and Kihei Youth Center, among others; and
WHEREAS, Joseph "Joey" W. Bertram III pushed for measures supporting the rights of workers; minors; the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer community; the legalization and responsible adult use of cannabis; and "many others, mundane and controversial"; and
WHEREAS, Joseph "Joey" W. Bertram III went above and beyond the call of duty, not only advocating for greenways and bike paths, but supporting transportation and planning projects such as the roundabout at the intersection below the Safeway in Kihei, Maui; and
WHEREAS, one of Joseph "Joey" W. Bertram III's most significant achievements was the Maui Veterans Highway bike route, as well as the Kihei Greenway/South Maui Bike Path (Kihei Greenway), which was included as an idea in the 1985 Kihei-Makena Community Plan; and
WHEREAS, the Kihei Greenway Bike Path is being built in phases and is now in design for Phase 3 from Waipuilani Road to Kaonoulu Street; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2022, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Department of Transportation is urged to name the Mokulele Bike Path after former State Representative Joseph "Joey" W. Bertram III in recognition and celebration of his life and role in the development of the Maui Veterans Highway bike route; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Director of Transportation.
