SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the department of health to implement a radiation monitoring pilot project.

 

 


     WHEREAS, the nuclear event in Fukushima, Japan, on March 11, 2011, continues to cause concern about levels of radiation in the Pacific; and

 

     WHEREAS, monitoring radiation levels in the Hawaiian Islands is necessary to measure the impact that the Fukushima nuclear disaster may have had on the environment, public health, and food supply; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Department of Health is requested to implement a radiation monitoring pilot project; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the radiation monitoring pilot project is requested to:

 

     (1)  Measure and monitor radiation levels in items such as food, dairy products, rainwater, aquifers, and drainage ditches that may be susceptible to increased radiation levels due to the March 11, 2011, Fukushima nuclear disaster; and

 

     (2)  Post periodic reports on the Department of Health's website of those radiation levels and their significance to the State; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the radiation monitoring pilot project is requested to commence on July 1, 2015, and terminate on June 30, 2020; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Health is requested to submit a preliminary report of its findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2018; provided that the report include a recommendation on whether the pilot project should be continued, modified, or terminated; provided further that the Department of Health is requested to submit a final report of its findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2021; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Director of Health.
