SENATE RESOLUTION

 

 

Encouraging the Department of Education to implement ocean safety and stewardship education FOR all fourth grade public school students.

 

 


     WHEREAS, Hawaii has seen a recent spike in local resident drownings; and

 

     WHEREAS, ocean and water safety awareness at a young age is key to drowning prevention; and

 

     WHEREAS, in the past the Department of Education provided water safety education to all public school students; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Nānākuli-Waianae Complex Area partnered with Nā Kama Kai to implement ocean safety and stewardship education for all fourth grade students within the Complex Area; and

 

     WHEREAS, Nā Kama Kai's mission is to connect Hawaii's keiki with the ocean and nurture a deep sense of stewardship for their natural environment; and

 

     WHEREAS, ocean safety and stewardship education should be reintroduced to public school students to increase awareness and prevent ocean drownings; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Department of Education is encouraged to implement ocean safety and stewardship education for all fourth grade public school students and to partner with Nā Kama Kai; and

 


     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education, Superintendent of Education, and Chief Executive Officer of Nā Kama Kai.
