STATE OF HAWAII

SENATE RESOLUTION

urging the state and state entities to support the hokulea and her crew as they journey around the world.

WHEREAS, Hokulea is a traditionally navigated vessel that proved the probability of intentional Polynesian voyaging and settlement of the largest ocean in the world when she first sailed from Hawaii to Tahiti in 1976 under the traditional navigation skills of one of the Earth's last master navigators; and

WHEREAS, Hokulea began reconnecting the peoples of the Pacific, rekindling pride and aspiration among Native Hawaiians and Pacific islanders; and

WHEREAS, Hokulea, with her remarkable mentors and teachers, became a catalyst for positive change in Hawaii while forming, nurturing, and learning from relationships around the world based on the shared values and responsibility for caring for the islands and honoring Hawaii's heritage and culture; and

WHEREAS, Hokulea continues to voyage, carrying Hawaii's diverse and accepting culture throughout the Pacific, bringing together Pacific island communities and voices and setting an environmental and cultural-based educational course for our children to know the hope and potential in themselves, their heritage, and their world; and

WHEREAS, voyaging on the Hokulea teaches each crewmember the individual and collective responsibilities to care for oneself, one another, the canoe, and the ocean in a manner that is respectful and sustainable; and

WHEREAS, Hokulea seeks to carry learned and shared experiences from thirty-eight years of traditional voyaging across more than 140,000 miles of Pacific Ocean waters on a worldwide voyage; and

WHEREAS, Hokulea's worldwide voyage will cover 47,000 miles over the next four years; and

WHEREAS, Hokulea will visit twenty-six countries and eighty-five ports; and

WHEREAS, during the worldwide voyage, Hokulea hopes to raise awareness of the importance of ocean protection for the survival of life on Earth; and

WHEREAS, Hokulea intends to raise awareness of the issues confronting Hawaii's shorelines, reefs, and deep waters, while honoring and sharing Hawaiian knowledge and practices of natural resource management; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, that the State and state entities are urged to support the Hokulea and her crew as they journey around the world; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor; Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism; Hawaii Tourism Authority; and Polynesian Voyaging Society.
