Resolution
regarding
foundational
principles
of
the

American
form
of
government.

WHEREAS,
each
General
Assembly
convenes
with
3
many
members
who
are
new
legislators,
it
is
fitting
4
and
proper
that,
in
addition
to
the
oath
of
office,
5
certain
foundational
principles
of
the
American
form
of
6
government
be
acknowledged;
and
7
WHEREAS,
the
members
of
the
90th
General
Assembly
8
do
hereby
acknowledge
the
Declaration
of
Independence
9
which
gave
birth
to
the
United
States
of
America,
and
10
recognize
that
the
laws
of
nature
and
nature’s
God
are
11
the
foundation
for
unalienable
rights
and
the
purpose
12
of
government
is
to
secure
these
rights;
and
13
WHEREAS,
the
members
of
the
90th
General
Assembly
14
do
hereby
acknowledge
the
United
States
Constitution
15
as
the
supreme
law
of
the
land
within
the
limits
which
16
the
Constitution
itself
imposes,
and,
the
powers
not
17
delegated
to
the
United
States
by
the
Constitution,
nor
18
prohibited
to
it
to
the
states,
are
reserved
to
the
19
states
respectively,
or
to
the
people;
and
20
WHEREAS,
the
members
of
the
90th
General
Assembly
21
do
hereby
acknowledge
the
Constitution
of
the
State
22
of
Iowa,
and
express
gratitude
to
the
Supreme
Being
23
for
the
blessings
hitherto
enjoyed
and
acknowledge
24
continued
reliance
upon
Him
for
future
blessings;
and

WHEREAS,
the
members
of
the
90th
General
Assembly

acknowledge
that
all
men
and
women
are,
by
nature,

free
and
equal,
and
have
certain
inalienable
rights,

which
include
enjoying
and
defending
life
and
liberty;

acquiring,
possessing,
and
protecting
property;
and
5
pursuing
and
obtaining
safety
and
happiness;
and

WHEREAS,
the
members
of
the
90th
General

Assembly
acknowledge
that
the
United
States
of

America
is
a
republic
and,
as
such,
functions
9
through
a
representative
form
of
government
wherein
10
representatives
selected
by
the
people
conduct
11
government’s
business
according
to
the
rule
of
law;
NOW

THEREFORE,

BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,

That
the
members
of
the
90th
General
Assembly,
as
15
representatives
selected
by
the
people
of
Iowa
in
a
16
free
republic,
do
hereby
resolve
to
operate
with
all
17
due
respect
to
the
laws
of
nature,
the
laws
of
the
18
United
States,
and
the
laws
of
the
State
of
Iowa.
