Resolution
recognizing
January
27,
2011,
as
a
day
1
to
honor
Iowa’s
community
colleges
on
their
45th
2
anniversary.

WHEREAS,
2011
marks
the
45th
anniversary
of
the
4
designation
of
the
first
of
fifteen
merged
area
5
schools,
now
called
community
colleges;
and
6
WHEREAS,
in
1965
the
legislation
creating
these
7
merged
area
schools
was
floor
managed
by
Senator
Jack
8
Kibbie;
and
9
WHEREAS,
today
Iowa
has
a
statewide
system
of
10
fifteen
community
colleges,
which
are
public,
11
postsecondary,
two-year
institutions
organized
as
12
comprehensive
community
colleges,
serving
all
of
Iowa’s
13
ninety-nine
counties;
and
14
WHEREAS,
Iowa’s
community
colleges
have
enjoyed
15
tremendous
success,
with
the
number
of
students
16
attending
community
colleges
growing
from
8,000
to
17
80,000;
and
18
WHEREAS,
Iowa’s
community
colleges
have
provided
19
easy
access
to
thousands
of
Iowans
who
seek
higher
20
education,
including
many
who
transfer
credits
to
21
senior
institutions
and
thousands
more
who
seek
22
high-quality
vocational-technical
programs;
and
23
WHEREAS,
adult
and
continuing
education
courses
and
24
job
training
programs
have
trained
thousands
of
Iowa’s
25
citizens,
who
have
improved
their
skills,
benefiting
26
businesses,
the
workforce,
and
the
overall
economy
of
27
the
state;
and

WHEREAS,
community
colleges
are
the
port
of
entry
1
for
many
of
the
poorest,
most
challenged,
and
most
2
disadvantaged
citizens
of
the
state;
NOW
THEREFORE,
3
BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
SENATE,
That
the
Senate
4
recognizes
January
27,
2011,
as
a
day
to
honor
5
the
fifteen
community
colleges
in
Iowa
on
the
45th
6
anniversary
of
their
founding.
