2014
is
the
150th
anniversary
of
the

and
recording
of
the
first

blocks
of
the

city
of
Ames;
and

WHEREAS,
from
its
humble
beginnings
on
December
6
17,
1864,
the
city
of
Ames
has
changed
and
grown
and
7
prospered;
and
8
WHEREAS,
the
city
of
Ames
provides
its
residents
9
with
quality
of
life
amenities
second
to
none;
and
10
WHEREAS,
the
city
of
Ames
has
received
numerous
11
national
awards
and
recognitions
including
being
ranked
12
the
United
States
city
with
the
3rd
lowest
unemployment
13
rate
by
Forbes
in
2014,
32nd
in
the
“Top
100
Most
14
Livable
Cities
in
America”
by
Livability.com
in
2014,
15
15th
nationally
in
the
“Best
Small
Places
for
Business
16
and
Careers”
by
Forbes
in
2013,
and
one
of
the
top
25
17
Best
Places
to
Retire
in
2013
by
Forbes.com;
and

WHEREAS,
Ames
High
School
is
ranked
3rd
within
Iowa
19
by
U.S.
News
&
World
Report;
and

WHEREAS,
the
city
of
Ames
is
home
to
Iowa
State
21
University,
the
largest
university
in
the
state,
a
22
recognized
national
leader
in
science
and
technology,
23
and
home
to
the
Iowa
State
University
Bioeconomy
24
Institute,
a
pioneer
in
developing
new
sources
of
25
energy
and
other
products
from
renewable
sources;
and

WHEREAS,
C.Y.
Stephens
Auditorium,
located
on
27
the
Iowa
State
University
campus,
has
been
named

the
American
Institute
of

Architects;
and

WHEREAS,
the
city
of
Ames
is
also
the
home
of

innovative
companies
focused
on
biotechnology,

cyber-innovation,
agriculture,
and
health
and
wellness,

as
well
as
the
thriving
Iowa
State
University
Research
6
Park
which
supports
the
development
of
world-class
7
companies;
and
8
WHEREAS,
to
acknowledge
the
sesquicentennial,
the
9
Ames
150
celebration
steering
committee
of
dedicated
10
volunteers
is
planning
celebratory
events,
public
11
education
opportunities,
and
legacy
projects
for
future
12
generations;
and
13
WHEREAS,
the
year-long
Ames
150
celebration
began
14
with
the
first-ever
public
Chamber
of
Commerce
annual
15
dinner
in
January
and
will
continue
with
an
expanded
16
Fourth
of
July
festival
and
an
autumn
Dinkey
Days
17
celebration;
and
18
WHEREAS,
the
year
will
culminate
with
the
Platting
19
Day
festivities
in
December
2014;
NOW
THEREFORE,
20
BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
SENATE,
That
the
Senate
21
honors
the
city
of
Ames
on
the
occasion
of
its
22
sesquicentennial
anniversary
and
invites
all
Iowans
23
to
participate
in
this
year-long
celebration
of
the
24
history
of
the
city
of
Ames.
