Bill Title: Amends the Medical School Curriculum Act. Provides that, for medical students who, on or after the effective date of the amendatory Act, matriculate into a medical school that is subject to the Act, the minimum required curriculum shall also include a medical humanities course that covers, among other things, the effects of institutional racism on medical education, medical research, and medical care in the United States. Effective immediately.

110 ILCS 55/1 from Ch. 144, par. 54.11

Amends the Medical School Curriculum Act. 1 AN ACT concerning education.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The Medical School Curriculum Act is amended by
5changing Section 1 as follows:
6 (110 ILCS 55/1) (from Ch. 144, par. 54.11)
7 Sec. 1. Each and every medical school established,
8maintained and operated by the State of Illinois shall include
9in the curriculum a department of general practice of medicine
10under the direction and supervision of a qualified general
11practitioner. The minimum requirements for the department
12shall include courses of study in family care including
13clinical experience, a program of preceptorships, a program of
14internships or general practice residences in a hospital and
15such other teaching techniques as in the judgment of the
16management of the school shall be best suited to encourage and
17implement the preparation of students for the general practice
18of medicine. For students who, on or after the effective date
19of this amendatory Act of the 103rd General Assembly,
20matriculate into a medical school that is subject to this
21Section, the minimum required curriculum shall also include a
22medical humanities course that covers, among other things, the
23effects of institutional racism on medical education, medical
