SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Charles Marshall "Bud" Kenney II, M.D.
4of Springfield, who passed away on December 16, 2021; and
5 WHEREAS, Dr. Kenney was born to Charles Marshall and
6Alberta Mae Hillyard Kenney in Springfield on November 15,
71931; he graduated from Springfield High School in 1949, where
8he lettered in track, football, and basketball; he graduated
9from Millikin University in 1953 and the University of
10Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago in 1958; he married
11Janet Kay Cruse on December 26, 1991, and they had twin sons,
12William and Charles; and
13 WHEREAS, Dr. Kenney began his private practice in Internal
14Medicine in Springfield in July 1959 and retired in February
152003; he served as a medical consultant for the Illinois
16Bureau of Disability Determination Services beginning in 1962
17and continued in that capacity until his death; during his
18career, he was instrumental in introducing CPR to Springfield
19and the surrounding area; and
20 WHEREAS, Dr. Kenney often performed in the medical charity
21fundraiser Medical Madness; he volunteered for the Springfield
22Commission on International Visitors and the Sister Cities

1Association of Springfield; and
2 WHEREAS, Dr. Kenney was a member of the Westminster
3Presbyterian Church for 72 years; he was a longtime member of
4the American Medical Association, the Sangamon County Medical
5Association, the Sangamo Club, and the Island Bay Yacht Club;
6he was also a member of the Springfield Road Runners, and he
7ran the Boston Marathon three times and completed a total of 26
8marathons; and
9 WHEREAS, Dr. Kenney believed in diversity, inclusion, and
10equality; he enjoyed painting, model railroading, sailing,
11scuba diving, playing the piano, singing in the Springfield
12Choral Society and the Westminster Presbyterian Church Choir,
13reading, solving crossword puzzles, and traveling, including
14to all 50 United States and multiple countries abroad;
15alongside his wife, he enjoyed entertaining guests from all
16over the world; he had a keen interest in Thich Nhat Hanh, a
17Vietnamese Buddhist monk who founded the Magnolia Grove
18Monastery and was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 1967;
19and
20 WHEREAS, Dr. Kenney was preceded in death by his parents
21and his brother, George W. Bud; and
22 WHEREAS, Dr. Kenney is survived by his wife; his twin

1sons, Charles Robert "Charlie" Kenney and William Marshall
2"Will" Kenney; his children from a previous marriage, Diane
3(Brian) Handler, Deirdre "DeeDee" Kenney, and Dr. Charles
4"Chick" (Dr. Marta) Kenney; his granddaughters, Sarah, Nadia,
5and Mara; his several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his
6lifelong friend, Philip Graham (Ragnhild) Vance; therefore, be

8 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
10Charles Marshall "Bud" Kenney II, M.D. and extend our sincere
11condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
12him; and be it further
13 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Dr. Kenney as an expression of our
15deepest sympathy.
