    A HOUSE RESOLUTION honoring the African American Achievers Youth Corps, Inc.

    Whereas, The African American Achievers Youth Corps, Inc. (AAAYC) was established in Gary in 1993 to work with African-American male youth ages 11 through 19 and their parents;

    Whereas, Founded “to empower young, African-American males by uplifting them spiritually, mentally, and emotionally”, the AAAYC helps its members with behavioral issues through mentoring and counseling that encourages positive behavior;

    Whereas, The AAAYC has worked with over 2000 African- American boys over the past 20 years, less than 10% of whom have a father in the home;

    Whereas, Research supports the concept that children learn what they live; therefore, the AAAYC works toward eliminating the absentee father cycle that entraps too many young African-

American males;

    Whereas, The AAAYC helps their members successfully complete their high school education, and only two members have dropped out of school from among the thousands that the AAAYC has worked with;

    Whereas, In 2008 the AAAYC re-opened the Glen Theatre, which provides educational and employment opportunities to the members of the AAAYC, where participants in the youth group can apply for employment in the theatre and learn the daily business operation of a theatre while receiving a powerful cultural experience from interacting with the stage performers; and

    Whereas, The African American Achievers Youth Corps, Inc. is dedicated to empowering African-American young males to take control of their lives in a positive manner: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives recognizes the African American Achievers Youth Corps, Inc. on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of its founding and thanks the organization for their dedicated work with the African-American male youth.
