     A bill to establish the terms upon which health benefits may

 

be provided to legislators.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 

     Sec. 1. This act shall be known and may be cited as the

 

"legislative health benefits act".

 

     Sec. 2. As used in this act:

 

     (a) "Health coverage" means hospital, medical-surgical, sick

 

care, dental, optical, and hearing benefits.

 

     (b) "Legislator" means a person duly elected and serving in

 

the senate or house of representatives of this state.

 

     Sec. 3. (1) Beginning January 1, 2012, this state shall pay

 

not more than 80% of the costs of any health coverage it provides

 

to a legislator during the term of his or her office.

 

     (2) A legislator who elects not to participate in the health


 

coverage offered as an incident of his or her office may receive an

 

alternate payment of 50% of the total yearly cost of single-person

 

health coverage for legislative office.
