A bill to amend 1939 PA 280, entitled
"The social welfare act,"
(MCL 400.1 to 400.119b) by adding section 56j.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 56j. (1) When an individual applies for assistance under
this act, if the individual has a school-aged child, the individual
shall sign an affidavit stating that the child is enrolled in and
attending school and has an attendance rate of not less than 80%
for the current school year, not including illness- or injury-
related absences. The affidavit shall include the child's name, the
name of the school the child attends, and the name of the school
district in which the school is located.
(2) The department may require consent to release the child's
school attendance records to the department as a condition of
eligibility for assistance under this act.
(3) As part of the eligibility verification process, when an
individual who has a school-aged child applies for assistance under
this act or for renewal of assistance under this act, the
department shall verify with the school that the child listed on
the affidavit submitted under subsection (1) is currently attending
the school and has an attendance rate of not less than 80% for the
current school year, not including illness- or injury-related
absences.
(4) When the recipient's school-aged child is in compliance
with school attendance requirements and has an attendance rate of
not less than 80% for the current school year, not including
illness- or injury-related absences, the recipient is eligible for
assistance under this act if all other eligibility requirements are
met.
(5) As a condition of eligibility for assistance under this
act, if an individual has a school-aged child attending school
outside of the home, that individual must attend not fewer than 1
parent-teacher conference for the school year in which he or she
receives assistance under this act.
