Koleszar, Whitsett, Ellison, Breen, Hertel, Lasinski, Puri, Brabec, Manoogian, Bolden, Morse, Young, Cavanagh, Haadsma, Shannon, Coleman, Liberati, Garza, Scott, Aiyash, Hammoud, Camilleri, Clemente, Pohutsky, Rogers, LaGrand, Hope, Kuppa, Weiss, Neeley, Hood, Brixie, Cynthia Johnson and Sowerby offered the following resolution:
Whereas, Voting is the cornerstone of democracy and is a right that should always be protected and advanced to ensure all voters are able to participate. Championing the vote is vital to maintain the highest ideals of our country--liberty, justice, and equality; and
Whereas, During the November 2018 general election, Michigan voters overwhelmingly supported ballot Proposal 3, which was intended to improve the state voting system and help ensure that the system worked for everyone. Proposal 3 was passed with nearly 67 percent of voters approving of it; and
Whereas, Ballot Proposal 3 of 2018 amended the Michigan Constitution by adding eight specific voting rights. Passage of Proposal 3 guaranteed the constitutional right to: a secret ballot, timely distribution of absentee ballots to military personnel and others living overseas, straight-ticket party voting, automatic voter registration, voter registration by mail up to 15 days before an election, in-person voter registration extended to election day with proof of residency, no-reason absentee voting, and a statewide audit of election results; and
Whereas, As legislation to restrict voting and roll back voter rights has been advanced across the country, it is imperative to stand against these undemocratic efforts. We must forever preserve and promote the right to vote; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we affirm support for ballot Proposal 3 of 2018 that enhanced voting rights after it was approved by a wide majority of Michigan voters.
