Reps. Yaroch, Allor, Calley, Chirkun, Clemente, Crawford, Hope, Koleszar, Kuppa, Love, Sabo, Sneller, Warren and Wittenberg offered the following resolution:

A resolution to declare October 2020 as Fire Prevention Month in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, Last year, home fires killed more than 102 Michigan citizens. According to the National Fire Incident Reporting System, fire departments throughout the state responded to over 13,000 home fires in 2019; and

Whereas, Cooking is the number one cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Scald burns are the second leading cause of all burn injuries, as hot liquids from coffee and even microwaved soup can cause devastating injuries. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen; and

Whereas, Michigan’s first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention, protection, and education so families can take personal steps to increase their safety from fire in their homes; and     Whereas, The 2020 Fire Prevention Month theme, “Serve up fire safety in the kitchen” effectively serves to educate the public about the importance of practicing safe cooking habits as a means to reduce fires and burns; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare October 2020 as Fire Prevention Month in the state of Michigan. We urge all the people of Michigan to educate themselves on and practice cooking safely during this observance.
