1.1A bill for an act
1.2relating to electrical licensing; providing an exemption from licensing for certain
1.3radio station employees;amending Minnesota Statutes 2012, section 326B.33,
1.4subdivision 7.
1.5BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.6    Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2012, section 326B.33, subdivision 7, is amended to read:
1.7    Subd. 7. Power limited technician. (a) Except as otherwise provided by law, no
1.8individual shall install, alter, repair, plan, lay out, or supervise the installing, altering,
1.9repairing, planning, or laying out of electrical wiring, apparatus, or equipment for
1.10technology circuits or systems unless:
1.11    (1) the individual is licensed by the commissioner as a power limited technician; and
1.12    (2) the electrical work is:
1.13    (i) for a licensed contractor and the individual is an employee, partner, or officer of,
1.14or is the licensed contractor; or
1.15    (ii) performed under the direct supervision of a master electrician or power limited
1.16technician also employed by the individual's employer on technology circuits, systems,
1.17apparatus, equipment, or facilities that are owned or leased by the employer and that are
1.18located within the limits of property operated, maintained, and either owned or leased by
1.19the employer.
1.20    (b) An applicant for a power limited technician's license shall (1) be a graduate of a
1.21four-year electrical course offered by an accredited college or university; or (2) have had
1.22at least 36 months' experience, acceptable to the commissioner, in planning for, laying out,
1.23supervising, installing, altering, and repairing wiring, apparatus, or equipment for power
1.24limited systems, provided however, that up to 12 months (2,000 hours) of experience
2.1credit for successful completion of a two-year post high school electrical course or other
2.2technical training approved by the commissioner may be allowed.
2.3    (c) Licensees must attain 16 hours of continuing education acceptable to the board
2.4every renewal period.
2.5    (d) A company holding an alarm and communication license as of June 30, 2003,
2.6may designate one individual who may obtain a power limited technician license without
2.7passing an examination administered by the commissioner by submitting an application
2.8and license fee of $30.
2.9    (e) A person who has submitted an application by December 30, 2007, to take the
2.10power limited technician examination administered by the department is not required to
2.11meet the qualifications set forth in paragraph (b).
2.12(f) Notwithstanding other law to the contrary, this subdivision does not apply to
2.13broadcast engineers and other radio station employees working with low-voltage wiring
2.14or data cables.
