House Concurrent Resolution 33

(As Adopted by House and Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 1964-1965 LANIER HIGH SCHOOL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM UPON THEIR INDUCTION INTO THE MISSISSIPPI SPORTS HALL OF FAME.

WHEREAS, the Lanier High School Boys Basketball Team finished the 1964-1965 season with a perfect record of 43-0 and demonstrated athletic fortitude and prowess to finish as state and national champions; and

WHEREAS, after a triumphant run on the hardwood resulting in the state championship, Lanier High continued their historic journey by claiming the national title at the Negro National High School Championship in Montgomery, Alabama, in March of 1965; and

WHEREAS, victims of circumstance, Lanier's championship came at a time of segregation, and the very day that they won the championship in Montgomery, defeating a Virginia team, the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., led a march of 25,000 civil rights demonstrators from Selma, Alabama, to Alabama's capital city of Montgomery; and

WHEREAS, though the team did not receive the appreciation it deserved back during the Civil Rights Era, the gentlemen that comprised the championship squad will finally get their deserved day of recognition when they are inducted into the prestigious Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, an honor shared with only the most impressive sports heroes in Mississippi history; and

WHEREAS, in a recognition ceremony 48 years in the making, history will render itself a true awarder of those whose patience, determination and humility never wavered, as the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum and WLBT, in partnership with Barksdale Cadillac, host a national championship banquet for the surviving members of the 1964-1965 Lanier Bulldogs, complete with national championship rings and jackets and investiture in the museum with the hanging of the team's photo on the Wall of National Champions; and

WHEREAS, in addition to recognizing the living legends of the Bulldogs team, the ceremony also pays homage to those deceased team members who could have only dreamed to receive such fanfare for their accomplishments, particularly Coach Orsmond Jordan, who led the hardwood powerhouse in its impressive and climactic undefeated season, averaging 102 points per game and defeating their opponents by an average of 40 points; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when such excellence was achieved not only in our state but also on the national level:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the 1964-1965 Lanier High School National Championship Boys Basketball Team upon their induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and extend best wishes for continued success in all of their future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the members of the 1964-1965 Lanier High School National Championship Boys Basketball Team, Lanier High School and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
