WHEREAS, with due respect and reverence, we salute and honor Agent Whatley, who was hired by the MBN on October 1, 1996, as a state narcotics officer assigned to the Meridian District Office, and whose devotion to duty exemplified the highest caliber of service akin to the role of a state narcotics officer, yet was untimely abbreviated upon yielding his life in the line of duty on August 20, 1998, while following a suspected drug violator which resulted in a fatal vehicle accident on Highway 15 in Jones County, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, Agent Whatley's sacrifice for the people of the State of Mississippi and the citizens of Jones County and the sacrifice endured by his family as a result, are not forgotten by the people of Jones County, and worthy of just and proper recognition; and
WHEREAS, befittingly the Jones County Board of Supervisors deemed it appropriate to bestow posthumous recognition upon Agent Whatley by requesting the Mississippi Legislature, through enactment of the body to name a portion of Highway 15 in Jones County in his honor; and
WHEREAS, in dutiful respect and homage for the service of our state's law enforcement officers who daily place their lives on the line for the preservation of peace and protecting the safety of Mississippi's citizens, and who in ultimate sacrificial nature give their lives in the line of duty in furtherance of those assurances, the Mississippi Legislature acknowledges the unwavering loyalty and enduring legacy of Agent Whatley, with the introduction of House Bill No. 984, 2015 Regular Session, which seeks to designate a segment of Mississippi Highway 15 in Jones County, Mississippi, beginning at its intersection with Trace Road and extending northerly to its intersection with Mississippi Highway 537 as the "Marc Lee Whatley Memorial Highway" in his honor and as tribute to his family; and
WHEREAS, though he has traversed the river of life to now stand upon the celestial shores of Heaven, the legacy of Agent Whatley's memory, which if put to music, would be a majestic symphonic masterpiece composed by the Holy Trinity, will continue to refresh the hearts and fond memories of his beloved survivors: wife, Lila Whatley; son, Marc Lee Whatley, Jr.; daughter, Lauren Whatley; and a host of other relatives, friends and colleagues; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to acknowledge the selflessness of an individual of Agent Whatley's venerated caliber who was devoted to a life of service and who left an indelible imprint on the lives of all he encountered through both his professional and community service:
