House Resolution 60

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING STAMPS SUPER BURGERS AND OWNER PHIL STAMPS, JR., UPON BEING NAMED ONE OF THE 2024 USA TODAY RESTAURANTS OF THE YEAR.

WHEREAS, Stamps Super Burgers, a popular, family-friendly, well-known burger restaurant located in Jackson, Mississippi, was named one of the 2024 USA TODAY Restaurants of the Year; and

WHEREAS, the restaurant originally started when the grandmother and grandfather of the current owner, Phil Stamps, Jr., purchased it in 1970 from Canterbury Grocery, and the entire family operated that business as a grocery and meat market for a while before transitioning over to burgers in 1986; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Stamps' aunts and uncles all had influence and worked at that location of the restaurant, so when his grandfather stepped away from the original location, his father stepped in and continued to own and operate at that location and put his touch on the business and started to make changes so that it would be more operational and more functional as a restaurant and not a grocery store; and

WHEREAS, an African-American-owned family business, Stamps Super Burgers has legions of loyal fans and a casual walk-in atmosphere, and the restaurant serves all with a juicy burger, potato fries and an environment you just can not help but love to feel; and

WHEREAS, in addition to a delectable burger, everyone who walks through the doors of Stamps Super Burgers is cheerfully greeted by co-owner Phil Stamps, Sr.; and

WHEREAS, the restaurant, which has been operating in the Washington Addition neighborhood in West Jackson since 1986, has a kitchen that is an open area at the center of the restaurant where customers can watch in awe as a Stamps employee works behind the counter to hand-make their famous beef patties or slice potatoes for fries as a side; and

WHEREAS, the showstopper, the signature Stamps burger, is constructed with mayonnaise, ketchup, lettuce, tomato and cheese with pickle, onions and mustard, but the menu also has other  choices, such as wings, a turkey burger or portobello burger; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend fine institutions in Mississippi such as Stamps Super Burgers, which has left a profound impact on the citizens of Mississippi and the Jackson community by offering them the opportunity to sit down and enjoy a delicious meal and fellowship with one another, and it continues to serve a positive role in this great Magnolia State:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF  REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Stamps Super Burgers and owner Phil Stamps, Jr., upon being named one of the 2024 USA TODAY Restaurants of the Year and express best wishes for its continued success and growth in the future.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the owner of Stamps Super Burgers, Mr. Phil Stamps, Jr., and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
