House Resolution 99
A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE PEARL RIVER COMMUNITY COLLEGE WILDCATS MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM UPON WINNING THE 2015 MISSISSIPPI ASSOCIATION OF COMMUNITY AND JUNIOR COLLEGES BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, the Pearl River Community College Wildcats Men's Basketball Team had an outstanding 2014-2015 basketball season, claiming the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) Basketball Championship by defeating the Holmes Bulldogs 65-54 in an electrifying matchup and finishing the season with an overall 25-4 record; and
WHEREAS, the first half of the championship matchup was intense, ending in a 27-27 tie, but the Wildcats came out of halftime swinging, and after back-to-back threes and a dominating 31-20 scoring run the Wildcats were named the victors; and
WHEREAS, their victory in the MACJC championship moved the Wildcats into the Region 23 Tournament, where they placed second in the title matchup, losing only by five points; and
WHEREAS, the Wildcats have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Richard Mathis, who has broadened the players' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution, and whose success in leading the charge has led the Wildcats to seven state titles in his 23-year tenure as head coach; and
WHEREAS, three Wildcat standouts grabbed postseason basketball honors for their spectacular play, including Freshmen Cortez Mitchell and Darral Willis, who were named to the All-MACJC South Division and All-Region 23 squads, and freshman Malik Clements, who was cited with All-MACJC honorable mention recognition; and
WHEREAS, although there were several standout individual performances, the Wildcats' success on the hardwood was a result of teamwork and unselfish play, with every teammate knowing his role and executing it perfectly; and
WHEREAS, the 2014-2015 Wildcats roster is: William Brown, Cortez Mitchell, Teddy Scott, Timmy Shaw, Kyarius Body, Jamond Franklin, Laderrick Scott, John Cornish, Darral Willis, Malik Clements, Dontellius Ross, Jordan Green, Jeffery Spence and Leon Hampton, Head Coach Richard Mathis and Assistant Coaches Chris Oney and Shane Maynard; and
WHEREAS, the Wildcats have developed a winning and cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coaches and bring honor to Pearl River Community College and the State of Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the impressive student athletes of this state:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Pearl River Community College Wildcats Men's Basketball Team and Head Coach Richard Mathis upon an outstanding 2014-2015 season and for winning the MACJC Basketball Championship and extend best wishes for continued success in all of their future athletic and academic endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Pearl River Community College, Head Coach Richard Mathis and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
