A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION EXTENDING THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE TO 2015 MISS MISSISSIPPI HANNAH ROBERTS OF SUMRALL, MISSISSIPPI, WHO WAS NAMED FIRST RUNNER-UP IN THE MISS AMERICA PAGEANT.

WHEREAS, even though Miss Mississippi Hannah Roberts did not capture the coveted crown of Miss America 2016 on September 13, 2015, the University of Southern Mississippi graduate certainly won over the crowd on hand in Atlantic City and millions of others around the globe who watched the telecast with her poise, personality and extraordinary musical talent.  Roberts, a Mount Olive, Mississippi, native and Sumrall High School graduate, finished as First Runner-Up; and

WHEREAS, in the Miss Mississippi Pageant, Hannah, 21, who competed as Miss University of Southern Mississippi, earned a $10,000 scholarship, which was part of $95,000 in scholarship money given away during the evening.  She plans to attend the University of Mississippi Medical Center.  Roberts was a favorite after winning preliminary competitions for talent and swimwear.  She performed Pablo Sarasate's "Zigeunerweisen" on violin for her talent.  Roberts said it was performed by 1989 Miss America Gretchen Carlson; and

WHEREAS, a biochemistry major with a minor in biology, Roberts graduated summa cum laude at University of Southern Mississippi.  A Goldwater Scholar, she was named Outstanding Senior from the College of Science and Technology and is a member of the Southern Miss Student Hall of Fame.  Her scholastic honors include:  Presidential Scholar, Honor College, HEADWAE Scholar, and her greatest nonacademic accomplishment is Mississippi Air-Pistol Champion.  Hannah has been accepted into medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.  Through her "Pages of Love" book collection/donation program, Roberts has distributed more than 25,000 new and "gently-used" books to various schools, churches, hospitals and other organizations; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this young Mississippi citizen who has brought honor and pride to her family, community, and the entire State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby extend the congratulations of the Legislature to 2015 Miss Mississippi Hannah Roberts who was named First Runner-Up in the Miss America Pageant.
