Senate Concurrent Resolution 572

(As Adopted by Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE WEST POINT HIGH SCHOOL "GREEN WAVE" FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH CHRIS CHAMBLESS FOR WINNING THEIR 8TH CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, the West Point High School "Green Wave" Football Team played a game of keep-away with Laurel High School on December 3, 2016, at Davis Wade Stadium.  Even when the Golden Tornadoes' high-powered offense was on the field, the Green Wave didn't let it do all that much.  Laurel managed just 98 yards on 34 offensive snaps as West Point defeated the Golden Tornadoes 29-8 in the Class 5A Mississippi High School Football Championship Game; and

WHEREAS, the Green Wave (14-1), which won 12 consecutive games to finish the season, claimed its eighth State Football Championship in 10 Title Game appearances.  "It hasn't sunk in yet," said junior Marcus Murphy, who ran for 141 yards and three touchdowns.  "It was a battle, but we had been working for this."  For West Point, that meant running the football.  The Green Wave tallied 326 yards total offense, with 307 yards coming on the ground.  Murphy scored on runs of 3 yards, 2 yards and 1 yard, while the closest Laurel got to the scoreboard again was a potential touchdown pass that was caught beyond the end line of end zone and a missed field goal.  Murphy powered his way from that and scored a touchdown to help seal the Class 5A Championship for West Point.  Murphy ran for three touchdowns and 141 yards on 33 carries to help lead West Point to a 29-8 win over Laurel.  This is the eighth State Championship for West Point, which last won a Title in 2010; and

WHEREAS, as good as Murphy was, West Point's defense was even better.  Laurel (13-2) averaged 253 yards per game.  The Golden Tornadoes were held to only 98 total yards and had only six first downs in the game.  "We challenged our defense tonight to play against a high-powered offense," Coach Chris Chambless said.  "This feels great," Murphy said.  The community has always been behind us and now we have a Gold Ball for them"; and

WHEREAS, the Roster for the West Point High School "Green Wave" Football Team is Demarrio Edwards, ATH; Marcus Murphy, QB; Chris Calvert, RB; Trevino Harris, RB; Antrayvious Brownlee, FS; Ej Bush, LB; Ledarius Glover, ATH; Brandon Lairy, LB; Nate Montgomery, SB, WR; Ryan Melton, FS; Brentt Cunningham, LB; Kevion Gibbs, DB; Thedore Shelton III, WR; Tyler Rupert, DB; Clayton Knight, QB; Jason Brownlee, DB; Jose Garcia, K; Jake Chambless, QB; Dylan Scott, QB; Travarcus Valentine, LB; Everitt Cunningham, TE, DL; Quantaze Powell, DB; Tahj Johnson, DB; Archie Jones, RB; Terence Cherry, DL; Rasson Carr, DB; Korimus Powell, DB; Jaylen Cungious, DE; John Facella, WR; Andre Lane, RB; Traevon Stennis, DB; Tyrese Johnson, WR; Tae Hampton, LB; Xavier Fair, LB; Tyler Hodo, Jaylun Eggerson, RB; Kameron Martin, RB; Amir Gordon'el; Kentavious Mcmillian, DB; Latarius Embry, DB; Zavion Miller, WR; Matthew Bagwell, TE; LeMarcus Yates, DB; Cassius Walker, DB; Tyson Davidson, CB; Jamel Banks, DT; CJ Melton, DL; Shun Crawford, WR; Jeqwan Young, WR; Jarvis Evans, DB; Jalon Sanders, LB; Robert Thompson, G; Jaylin Webb, DL; Stededric Griffis, DE; Chris Gathings; Ezekial Head, OL; Jeremy Latty, OL; Brian Crawford, LB; Derrick Lee, OL; Draylon Rieves, OL; Stefon Townsend, DL TE; Tyler Brownlee, OL; Ladarius Lee; Tucker Peeples, OL; Zameek Price, OL; Jameek Price, OL; Dontavius Pargo, DT; Rashad Cribbs, DB; Tinsley Banks, OL; Jose Lemus, K; Jeremiah Walker, DL; Nehemiah Walker, KeAris Smith, OL; James Spann, OL; Samuel Randle, OL; David Rush, DL; Daveion Reives, T; Austin Morton, OL; Jermarquez Cummings, WR; Darius Quinn, WR; Jerni White, WR; Sema'j Harris, TE; and Tyren Warren, WR; Chris Chambless, Head Coach; Brett Morgan, Offensive Coordinator; Matt Snow, Defensive Coordinator; Roger Burton, Defensive Line; Jerry Fremin, Wide Receiver; Charles Herron, Defensive Back; Ricky Melton, Assistant Coach; Seth Stillman, Assistant Coach; Casey Welch; Offensive Line; Alex Williams, Running Back; Gil Cochran, Athletic Trainer; and Justin Vollenweider, Video Coordinator; and
