Senate Concurrent Resolution 645
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE WEST BOLIVAR HIGH SCHOOL "EAGLES" BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH WILLIE THOMAS FOR WINNING THE CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, Wesley Lloyd's tipped pass with 6 seconds left secured the West Bolivar High School Eagles 51-49 win on March 4, 2010, over Baldwyn in a wild, wacky finish to the Class 2A State Championship game at the Mississippi Coliseum; and
WHEREAS, West Bolivar got revenge from a stinging loss to Baldwyn which ended West Bolivar's 18-game win streak, beating the Eagles to win the North 2A Championship, a game played at Baldwyn. That sent West Bolivar to Jackson as a No. 2 seed, forcing Coach Willie Thomas' team into a semifinal match with South champ and defending state champion Hinds AHS. The Eagles beat Hinds and then clipped Baldwyn for title, and some retribution; and
WHEREAS, Cord Walker, the game MVP, led West Bolivar with 17 points; and
WHEREAS, "We've been waiting for this for a longtime," Coach Willie Thomas said, "not just our team but our Mississippi Delta community"; and
WHEREAS, this season was the culmination of an excellent history of playoff appearances for the Eagles. The 2009-2010 season marked the Eagles 18th Division Championship, its 26th Playoff Appearance and its 5th State Championship; and
WHEREAS, the team was led by Head Coach Willie Thomas who thanked the Rosedale community for making 2009-2010 a successful season which "represented a win for the entire Mississippi Delta"; and
WHEREAS, the West Bolivar Eagles' 2009-2010 Basketball Team Roster is: Cord Walker, Wesley Lloyd, Davion King, Mack Foster, Jr., Millaun Brown, Jeremy Smith, Emanuel Ford, Terrance Matthews, Roosevelt Matthews (Mgr), Frank Fields, Ladarian Shavers, Jacory Lee, Kylan Johnson, Terrance Johnson, Larry Walker, Ladarian Tucker, Rodney Barnett (Mgr) and Ryan Flore (Scorer); Head Coach Willie E. Thomas and Assistant Coach Cedric Armstrong; and
WHEREAS, it is with pride that we recognize the special accomplishments of this team which brought honor and identity to their school, the Mississippi Delta and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the West Bolivar High School "Eagles" Basketball Team and Head Coach Willie Thomas for their Class 2A State Championship and their outstanding 2009-2010 season, and extend to them the best wishes of the Legislature for future scholastic and athletic successes.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Thomas, the team, the Superintendent and Principal of West Bolivar, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
