SYNOPSIS

     Clarifies police powers of certain sheriff's officers to enforce motor vehicle and traffic laws.

An Act concerning the powers of sheriff's officers and supplementing Chapter 154 of Title 2A of the New Jersey Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    Sheriff's officers of a county wherein the sheriff conducts road patrols and wherein there is no county police department shall have the powers to enforce all the provisions of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes, including the provisions of section 5 of P.L.1950, c.142 (C.39:3-84.3), provided they are fully trained and certified and the county provides all the equipment appropriate and necessary for such enforcement.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill provides that sheriff's officers who conduct road patrols and serve in counties where there is no county police department have the power to enforce all the provisions of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes (Motor Vehicles), including the authority to weigh and measure trucks set forth in section 5 of P.L.1950, c.142 if they are fully trained and certified and the county provides all the necessary and appropriate equipment.
