SYNOPSIS
Expresses support for "Breakfast Bowl" held by Montclair State University and Rowan University and recognizes food insecurity efforts of these institutions.

An Assembly Resolution expressing support for the "Breakfast Bowl" held by Montclair State University and Rowan University and recognizing the food insecurity efforts of these institutions.
Whereas, Montclair State University and Rowan University, two of New Jersey's largest institutions of higher education, are slated to commence the first annual "Breakfast Bowl" football game, which aims to bring attention to the fight against food insecurity many residents across the State endure; and
Whereas, The winner of the "Breakfast Bowl" shall determine whether New Jersey's popular breakfast food is to be called "Pork Roll" or "Taylor Ham" until the teams meet for the "Breakfast Bowl" the following year; and
Whereas, The "Breakfast Bowl" is to culminate in a trophy presentation to the winning team by elected officials and members of the executive staff of both institutions; and
Whereas, The "Breakfast Bowl" provides a unique opportunity for the Montclair and Rowan communities, corporate sponsors, residents of the State, and elected officials to come together in the fight against food insecurity across New Jersey; and
Whereas, Montclair State University and Rowan University are leaders in higher education with extensive academic and athletic programs available to students; and
Whereas, Football programs at both Montclair State University and Rowan University are among the most successful in New Jersey and enjoy strong alumni connections and widespread stakeholder support; and
Whereas, Montclair State University operates its Red Hawk Pantry for food insecure members of the campus; offers a weekly shuttle to an off-campus grocery store that accepts SNAP benefits; maintains a community garden that provides fresh produce to the Red Hawk Pantry; and runs a food recovery network to fight food waste; and
1Whereas, Montclair State University is partnering with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey in Hillside, and Rowan University is partnering with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey in Egg Harbor Township to strengthen efforts against food insecurity and complement the universities' existing collaborations with their on-campus food pantries; and1
Whereas, Rowan University operates its SHOP, a food pantry for food insecure members of the campus; is a site for Fresh For All, an initiative spearheaded by Philabundance to bring fresh produce to those in need; and offers a new food pantry onsite at the Cooper Medical School in Camden for medical students; and
Whereas, The "Breakfast Bowl" provides Montclair State University and Rowan University an opportunity to continue their work and further engage their communities in the food insecurity relief effort; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. This House expresses its support for the annual "Breakfast Bowl" between Montclair State University and Rowan University and the underlying efforts of these institutions to fight against food insecurity in New Jersey.
2. This House also recognizes the significant contributions of Montclair State University and Rowan University in higher education through academics, community development, and athletics.
3. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the Presidents and Athletic Directors of Montclair State University and Rowan University and the Governor.
