        Introduced  by  M.  of  A.  O'DONNELL  --  read once and referred to the
          Committee on Education -- committee discharged, bill amended,  ordered
          reprinted as amended and recommitted to said committee

        AN  ACT to amend the education law, in relation to enacting the "freedom
          to read act"

          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:

     1    Section 1. This act shall be known and may be cited as the "freedom to
     2  read act".
     3    §  2. Subdivision 5 of section 13 of the education law is redesignated
     4  the closing paragraph, and a new subdivision  5  is  added  to  read  as
     5  follows:
     6    5. Policies to ensure that school libraries and library staff, includ-
     7  ing  but  not  limited  to  certified  library  media  specialists,  are
     8  empowered to curate and develop collections that provide  students  with
     9  access  to  the  widest  array  of developmentally appropriate materials
    10  available to such school district.
    11    § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
