BAILEY -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Crime Victims, Crime and Correction AN ACT to amend the correction law, in relation to providing vocational training to inmates on the installation of solar hot water systems for the provision of hot water to correctional facilities The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. Subdivision 4 of section 137 of the correction law, as 2 added by chapter 476 of the laws of 1970, is amended to read as follows: 3 4. Whenever there shall be a sufficient number of cells or rooms in a 4 correctional facility, each inmate shall be given sleeping accommo- 5 dations in a separate cell or room, provided, however, that nothing 6 herein contained shall be construed so as to limit the right of the 7 department to utilize dormitory-type accommodations where necessary or 8 where appropriate to a program of treatment. To the extent practicable, 9 such cells, rooms and dormitories shall be plumbed to provide inmates 10 hot water. 11 § 2. Subdivision 2 of section 171 of the correction law, as amended by 12 chapter 364 of the laws of 1983, is amended to read as follows: 13 2. Such labor shall be either for the purpose of the production of 14 supplies for said institutions, or for the state, or any political 15 subdivision thereof, or for any public institution owned or managed and 16 controlled by the state, or any political subdivision thereof; or for 17 the purpose of industrial training and instruction, or partly for one, 18 and partly for the other of such purposes. Where practicable, inmates 19 shall be provided vocational training to install solar hot water systems 20 to provide hot water to cells, rooms and dormitories lacking in such 21 amenity pursuant to subdivision four of section one hundred thirty-seven 22 of this chapter. 23 § 3.
