AN ACT

Designating a portion of S.R. 642 in Northumberland and Montour

2

Counties, as the United States Army Specialist Zachariah W.

3

Long Highway.

WHEREAS, Zachariah W. Long, of Northumberland County,

5

graduated from Milton Senior High School in June 2001; and

6

WHEREAS, Zachariah W. Long enlisted in the Army Delayed Entry

7

Program in July 2000, his junior year; and

8

WHEREAS, Zachariah W. Long began basic training on July 27,

9

2001; and

10

WHEREAS, Upon completion of his training, Zachariah W. Long

11

was assigned as a Long Range Surveillance Specialist; and

12

WHEREAS, Although eligible to attend Army Ranger School after

13

he completed basic and specialized training, Specialist Long

14

chose to go to Iraq with his team, stating that Army Ranger

15

School would be there for him in the future; and

16

WHEREAS, Specialist Long was assigned to the 519 Military

17

Intelligence Battalion, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Bragg,

18

North Carolina; and

19

WHEREAS, Specialist Long was deployed to Iraq in February

2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom; and

2

WHEREAS, While in the courageous service of his country,

3

Specialist Zachariah W. Long was killed outside of Mosul, Iraq,

4

on May 30, 2003.

The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

6

hereby enacts as follows:

7

Section 1.  United States Army Specialist Zachariah W. Long

8

Highway.

9

(a)  Designation.--A portion of the road S.R. 642, beginning

10

at the intersection of S.R. 642 and S.R. 54 and proceeding west

11

to the border of Northumberland and Union Counties is designated

12

as the United States Army Specialist Zachariah W. Long Highway.

13

(b)  Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and

14

maintain appropriate road signs displaying the designated name

15

of the road to traffic in both directions.

Section 2.  Effective date.

17

This act shall take effect in 60 days.
