| AN ACT |
| |
1 | Designating the Davis Street Bridge over Interstate 81 in Moosic |
2 | Borough, Lackawanna County, as the Andrew and Durando Pompey |
3 | Memorial Bridge. |
4 | The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania |
5 | hereby enacts as follows: |
6 | WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Andrew A. Pompey was born on May 1, |
7 | 1917, in the Minooka section of Scranton; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Pompey enlisted in the United States |
9 | Army within days following the attack on Pearl Harbor; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Upon completion of parachute training, Staff |
11 | Sergeant Pompey was assigned to the 504th Parachute Infantry |
12 | Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Pompey participated in combat jumps |
14 | in Italy and Sicily; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment was assigned |
16 | to the January 22, 1944, invasion of Anzio, Italy, where they |

1 | earned the nickname "Devils in Baggy Pants"; and |
2 | WHEREAS, While leading his squad in an assault of a bridge |
3 | spanning the Mussolini Canal near Sassano, Staff Sergeant Pompey |
4 | was killed by enemy artillery; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Pompey is interred in the Italian |
6 | American Cemetery adjacent to Davis Street in Scranton near the |
7 | bridge being designated by this act; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Private First Class Durando J. Pompey was born on |
9 | September 15, 1921, in the Minooka section of Scranton; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Private First Class Pompey enlisted in the United |
11 | States Army and was inducted on September 7, 1942; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Private First Class Pompey was assigned to the 119th |
13 | Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, known as "Old |
14 | Hickory"; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Shortly after landing on Omaha Beach in June 1944, |
16 | during an attack through the French hedgerows country toward |
17 | Point Hebert and St. Lo, Private First Class Pompey was killed |
18 | by an enemy artillery barrage; and |
19 | WHEREAS, Private First Class Pompey is interred in the |
20 | American Cemetery on Long Island, New York; and |
21 | WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Pompey and Private First Class Pompey |
22 | were posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. |
23 | The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania |
24 | hereby enacts as follows: |
25 | Section 1. Andrew and Durando Pompey Memorial Bridge. |
26 | (a) Designation.--The Davis Street Bridge over Interstate 81 |
27 | in Moosic Borough, Lackawanna County, is designated the Andrew |
28 | and Durando Pompey Memorial Bridge. |
29 | (b) Signs.–-The Department of Transportation shall erect and |
30 | maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the bridge to |

1 | traffic in both directions on the bridge. |
2 | Section 2. Effective date. |
3 | This act shall take effect in 60 days. |
